Understanding BMI: Why It Matters for Your Health

At Celebrating Life Community Health Center, we want to help you stay informed about your health every step of the way. This April, we’re focusing on BMI, or Body Mass Index—a simple number that can give you a better idea of whether you’re at a healthy weight.

So, What Is BMI?

BMI is a quick way to measure body fat based on your height and weight. While it’s not a perfect tool, it gives healthcare providers a general idea of whether your weight might be affecting your health.

Here’s how it works:

  • A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy.

  • A BMI below 18.5 may mean you’re underweight.

  • A BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.

  • A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

Again, BMI doesn’t tell the full story—factors like age, muscle mass, and body composition also matter. But it’s a good place to start!

Why Does BMI Matter?

Keeping an eye on your BMI can help you and your healthcare provider spot early signs of health risks such as:

  • Heart disease

  • High blood pressure

  • Diabetes

  • Joint issues

Knowing your BMI can open the door to simple lifestyle changes or helpful conversations that support your long-term health.
