Empowering You to Take Charge of Your Health

October is Health Literacy Month! At Celebrating Life Community Health Center, we believe that understanding your health is the first step toward taking charge of it. But what exactly is health literacy, and why is it so important?

What Is Health Literacy?

Health literacy is the ability to understand basic health information and services so you can make well-informed decisions about your health. It’s about knowing where to go for help, understanding your doctor’s advice, reading medication labels, and being able to follow treatment plans.

Why Does Health Literacy Matter?

When you understand health information, you’re better equipped to take care of yourself and your loved ones. Studies show that people with higher health literacy are more likely to manage chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and asthma. They’re also more likely to get preventive services like vaccinations and cancer screenings, which can catch potential health issues early. On the other hand, limited health literacy can lead to misunderstandings, missed appointments, and medication errors. It can even increase the risk of hospitalization.

How Can You Improve Your Health Literacy?

Here are a few tips to help boost your health literacy:
  1. Ask Questions Don’t hesitate to ask your healthcare provider if you don’t understand something. At Celebrating Life Community Health Center, our team is here to explain things clearly, whether it’s about medications, tests, or procedures. No question is too small!
  2. Take Notes During your appointments, jot down important information. Writing things down can help you remember details later.
  3. Use Trusted Resources Be careful where you get your health information. Stick to trusted sources like your healthcare provider, government health websites (like CDC.gov), or reputable medical organizations.
  4. Bring a Friend If you’re feeling overwhelmed, bring a family member or friend to your appointments. They can help you ask questions and remember what your provider says.
  5. Know Your Medications Make sure you understand what each medication is for and how to take it. If you’re not sure, ask! It’s better to double-check than to take something incorrectly.
